351W With Comp Cam

Considering installing comp cam 35-255-5 in my 351w while motor is out of my bronco. Motor is a non roller 351w with all the bolt on items and upgraded exhaust. My bronco will be rolling on 35's, 456 gears and long travel suspension, e40d trans. From what i read a cam should add around 10% to 20% increase in hp/trq but with a stock motor not sure if cam will be worth the $. Thanks.

If it's breathing well and you've already done bolt on plus exhaust then you should do injectors and ECU work and a cam. If the computer is stock it should have the capacitors changed at the least and a mild cam. An E85 sensor and a ECU upgrade with a cam will give you a serious boost in wheel HP. How much money are you looking to sink? And what sound are you after? I'm personally a run it hard until it dies and put a crate in it guy. So I would only maintain it. Minimize cost. And put all the money into a crate turnkey when it's time. Who knows what EFI they're selling by then. Cams are cool and the sound alone is worth it also.

The cam is by far the single biggest bang for your buck upgrade possible on an earlier motor, go for it you won't be disappointed.

IF you can swing it, upgrading to a roller cam is WELL worth it. If the flat-tappet cam wipes out on break-in, that's almost $500 down the drain for cam/lifters/gaskets -- you'll be money ahead by going roller in the first place. Even if you have an early block, one can be used rather easily using 5.0 roller cam parts. . OR trying to find a roller-cam 5.8L block is easier now than when I did it 15+ years ago! Now I have several stockpiled.cam.

Comp cam 35-255-5 seems to be the best all around cam, only lifters need to be changed during install. Listened to some audio of cam and wow i like. Never installed a cam but seems manageable. Thanks guys!

I have the cam installed on my truck, but you need to upgrade your valve springs. I can't seem to find which ones I ordered, I also had to get the spring retainer assembly too, as the stock ones won't work.

It has been discussed on this forum before that if you need to change the springs on these heads you really need a split set of retainers to give all of them the same installed height. For some reason the keeper groove is .100 lower on the exhaust valves than it is on the intakes so even if you eliminate the rotators the installed height is still too short. I use 1/2 set of PBM/Erson 502 and 1/2 set of 502S retainers. This works out just right. the 502S goes on the intake and the 502 goes on the exhaust using a regular standard set of keepers.

Be VERY conservative with your loads, seated and open. keep it under 250lbs open. Buying the springs recommended by Comp usually results in loads that are unrealistically high and the life of the camshaft ends up being extremely short.

A single pattern cam would be a much better choice for your application.
