My truck has good oil pressure while driving, but if I put it into gear and keep my foot on the brake it drops to about 40psi, sometimes less. As soon as I tap the gas or put it in nuetral it rises again...Anything to be concerned about?
I don't understand exactly why my truck does that, but, I do have a serious water jacket leak. Coolant is in the crankcase somewhere. When I am at a low idle or low rpm's my pressure occasionally drops very low, (don't have a good guage, just dashboard needle). I own a 4.9L with 150,000miles on her.
Sounds like you should start doing some basic troubleshooting. Is your oil overdue for changing. Have you checked the compression lately? Is there signicant blowby coming from the breather tube?(there might be oil in your breather tube filter if you have one). I would read alot of the threads in here and you will probably notice that is a common problem GooD luck
i just put a mechanical gauge into mine and with valvoline 10 w 30 i hold about 25 - 30 psi at idle when warmed up. on a cold start it will have about 60. When driving it holds about 50 or so. so 40 at idle when warm seems like a darned good figure.
Its a real gauge. Pressure is just under 60 when cold, same with driving/warm. I think i have 10W-30 in it, but I can't remember. I can never remember what kind from change to change. I just won't think anything of it since it seems normal from what you all tell me. I"ll just keep an eye on it so it doesn't go any lower...How low can the pressure get before things start to break?
basically the correct Ford way to check oil pressure is to start it cold run it to 2000rpm. you should have 40-60 psi any lower you have problems. the loss in oil pressure in gear is normal. the slight loss of pressure from the load of the transmission will affect this as will the loss of 100-150 rpm. the numbers you give is what alot of people would like to see. don't worry it sounds good to me..
