Diesel Additives

I have a 2003 Excursion with 6.0L diesel engine at 171K miles. What brand and type of additives should I be using? I live in Southern CA so it rarely gets in the 40's in the winter. Thanks Guys!

That’s like asking what oil is the best, lots of opinions out there with very few of those opinions being based on anything other than advertising.

Archoil is a stable within the 6.0 crowd that many swear by, Optilube and the hot shot secret line of stuff has a decent following as well. While others swear by the ole white or gray bottles of power service diesel kleen.

Basically pick your poison, no one really knows for sure if one is better than the others. If you want to go off just which group shouts the loudest about how great their additive is, then that’s probably Archoil.

when asked that question, I usually say something funny like "which one tastes the best".

I use Opti-Lube in the oil, following replacement of injectors, and the Ford cetane booster in the fuel tank.
I do see a difference with the cetane booster, the egt's are a few degrees higher, and my fuel economy is better.

I live in VA where temps can get down in the teens and up to 100 with 1000% humidity. I use archoil products and I can tell a very noticeable difference if I don't use them. I have 260k on my 6.0 and will have stiction if I don't use an additive. Performance and fuel mileage are noticeable when I use or don't use the additive. Hot shot didn't work as good as Archoil. Ford stuff was better than Hotshot but Archoil I notice the best results. My 2 cents.

Have you tried the Opti-Lube fuel treatment. It has great numbers compared to others.

I was experiencing stiction symptoms and a little shake in my 6.0 for a few months after I got it back in August of last year. I knew about stiction but never used anything in the 6.0s of 7.3s I've had over the years, and the archoil made my excursion into a new truck. Quieter, effortless power, no shake. Yea, sounds like a paid testimonial.....but it works and is necessary at some state of heui life due to the inherent nature of how heui works, and how long the injection components last (they last a long time, so cruddy oil build up is inevitable).
