Different Wheels Front and Rear

I was looking at my wheels prepping to install the front disc brakes. I had never looked closely. The front and rear wheels are different. The rear have a steel valve stem and a different construction. The fronts look like a "normal" wheel.

Any info appreciated!

Looks like the backs might be split rims. Maybe truckdog can be of help.

Ooh... nylon tires, those things smoke more than Willie nelson durring a burnout.
I keep some old nylon tires around for that very purpose.

The rears appear to be like Firestone RHP type rims. They are multi piece rims and special equipment on F250s of the era. They are not to be confused with the true widow maker Firestone RH5 rims.

Yeah, fronts are drop center one piece style, rears are two piece having the Firestone RHP locking side ring/rim combo. In some areas of the country it’s becoming hard to find service on the RHPs. Stu

Thanks all. Can I use those rears if I can find someone to mount them?

A larger commercial tire shop that services larger trucks and agricultural equipment should be able to service tires on the RHP rims for you. Your more plentiful consumer tire shops that service passenger and pickup trucks would likely pass.

I found a commercial place an hour away. Will call them. Any tire size recommendations?

I am thinking of sticking with bias ply tires and going for the ones below unless my front disc calipers won't fit under the front wheels. I like the aggressive look but maybe a smoother tire is a better idea. It is just for around town. Then I need to find a 17" option.

I have searched far and wide for the Budd 70720 / 73240 but have come up empty. If anyone has a lead I will gladly take it. There is one set on eBay for $1300 which seems like highway robbery.

maybe some later model wheels will work. I would like it the dog dish hub caps fit...

Traditionally, guys would run "hiway rib" tires on the front and traction tires on the rear if there was ever a time when they were driving on unimproved roads or winter conditions. They'll be easier to steer and have less steering wheel vibration, and certainly less road noise. There's no point in having traction tires in the front unless you have 4wd. Stock 17" rims were 2 piece widowmakers, and you probably don't want to go there.

I’ll check with some buddies to see if a set of SRW 17.5s is available. I’ll post what I hear. If you stay with the 16s I’d think bias ply 7.50-16” as original would be appropriate. Stu

Found a set - in MT. Shipping to MA would be a need, but I’m sure they’d be more reasonably priced than the ones you see on eBay. Am also waiting for a reply from a Midwest buddy. Stu
