We are planning to take a f450 dually to Central and south America. There are many many Rangers in South America, but not so many F series. Is there a reasonable commonality of spares between the Ranger and the F450?
Lots of Ford products in south America, are older model products sold as current year models.
Get some family members in the U.S. set up to ship you parts when you need them.
I just hear Cptn Ron warning about the gorillas. Hopefully it is Ranger trucks and not some paramilitary ranger group.
Sounds like a nice trip for a adventurous person. Can't help on trucks but seem like maybe a Ranger may be better for you vs a f450? When in Rome kind of thing.
Hopefully you dont need service at all south of the boarder. Class 2 and above F series are not common at all there and finding someone who knows how to even service one will be difficult. Nothing on a Ranger is going to help you on an F450 as well as all the differences in the south american F series of comparable size. Youll be somewhat ok in Mexico but beyond that your F450 is a unicorn in those countries.

Gas or diesel? As noted above, you are going to need fuel filters in quantity if you get too far off their version of a major highway. Plenty of locations where you can only buy fuel from a local with a 55 gallon drum with a handcrank pump. It would do you well to pump it into an aux tank with a dual filter setup first and then use that to fill the truck.
Question - how much are you having to pay to get the truck shipped into SA from CA? Just curious - it isn't crazy expensive for motorcycles but a Super Duty is a whole other deal.

it will be gas, because diesel is poor quality in peru and Bolivia.
It will cost about $4k to get it from Panama to Colombia, which is a pain, but perfectly doable. I'm in Argentina at present and there are plenty of US registered vehicles here touring.
