I am looking for help on my 96 ranger interior heater temperature control. The heat is stuck on hot and I cannot turn it down. I figured it might be the temperature control switch on the heater itself but my local Ford dealer would not sell me switch unless they installed it themselves, they said that they are not sure if that is the problem or not. I don't want to go to the expense of having them do it if it is a simple little switch. Is there a way to check to see if it is this switch, possibly by crossing the terminals in the plug that goes into the back of the switch and see if the heater door opens and closes? It seems that the switch will not let the heater door open or close on its own.

Instead of using a jumper wire, use a test light. To use a jumper wire, you'd need to find out how many amps that circuit usually has, and make up a fused jumper. In the Haynes manual, it appears to be 7.5 amps.
If you do not have a service manual, you should get one before you do ANY tests.
What the dealer is talking about is that the blend door actuator may be at fault, not the switch.
Check out the link for the blend door problem in the tech info post, this is a common cause. Find another dealer if they don't what to sell you something unless they install it.
where do I get to thelink on the blend door actuator repair? is it possible that the little motor inside the actuator is bad? I took the actuator off and nothing seems to happen when I work the heater controls. what exactly does drilling the D shaped nub on the actuator and putting in a pin do?
