here's a question! i have a 92 ranger with a 2.3 5sp man. that has a ping WITH the egr vaccum hooked up , but when i unhook the vaccum supply the ping stops . i have had codes 327 & 334 and then 332 so i replaced the evp but the same thing happens. it seems that when i do anything to the egr vavle it stops the ping for a little while . anyone got any ideas?
i have no codes except when i unhook the vaccum to the egr valve which produces a 332 = insufficent egr . the ping appears at about 55 mph at a cruise and when i start a slight strain on the engine the ping stops until i level off again ????
When you "do something" to your egr, do you pull the neg battery cable off. I'm not sure about your 92 2.3.....does it have fuel injection. I know that on my 87 2.9 EFI if I change a sensor or clean out the thottle body, I only notice improvement after I leave the neg battery cable off for 10 min or so puts the ECM (computer brain) in a relearning mode(or default mode). I have read elsewhere that the engine will run in the default mode for 50-80 key on cycles before the the ECM learns and apply changes. If what I did to try to correct my problem didn't work...the problem returns after that relearning period. I don't know if your system works the same, and maybe someone here who knows how your system works can clear this up.
hello bff. yes my 92 ranger is fuel injected. i have pulled the egr valve off and cleaned it along with neg battery cable and then the egr position sensor and the problem goes away for a short time but returns . the ping seems to work the opposite of the way of how ping normally works . when i accelerate the ping stops until i level off at about 55 mph . i have stopped on the side on the road and removed the vaccum to the egr and the ping stops. this is reverse of the egr system--------- strange huh??
Hey "e g rred", I might be able to shed a little light on this. These engines have knock sensors. Even my old carbed '85 has one. The thing that I have noticed is that they seem to "over-compensate". When I had my distributor advanced enough that the electronic spark timing couldn't compensate fully, it would ping at part throttle, like you are saying, but be quieter at wide open throttle. I put high octane gas in to silence the ping until I had time to set the distributor properly. The knock sensor advanced the timing SO FAR, that it pinged EVEN WORSE with the high octane. (wasn't bad gas either ... it was definitely timing over-compensation). Like you said, the EGR should REDUCE ping if anything. But, if your knock sensor is over-compensating, the ping will be worse, instead of quieter. Many months ago, there was mention about how Marvel Mystery Oil would silence ping in Ranger engines. I think it was because the oil in the gas "fooled" the knock sensor. Oil in the gas would be like a lower octane rating, thus the sensor would delay the timing further, just enough to silence ping. Does your '92 have a distributor?? Or is it that distributorless ignition?? If you have a distributor, you could try retarding the entire distributor a few degrees. Your truck will still run OK ... the electronic spark advance will compensate accordingly. But, it might be enough to get rid of the ping at part throttle. And/or, try the Marvel Mystery Oil. What kind of gas do you use?? If you're using something higher than 87, try 87 and see what happens.
this is a great site. thanks to fte. thanks also to amp17757 for the reply. i have a dis system ( 8 ) plugs . i never tried Marvel oil before . but an option . iuse 87 oct fuel mostly bp and some times shell with same problem . i read on a forum onetime about the knock sensor but can't find it on my engine so i called oriellys and did not show one for this truck . is called by another name? i can/t find anything in the haynes manul either. have you ever heard of the spring inside the egr rattling from side to side when vaccum is called up that would make this sound? i read this somewhere once ??????? happy thanksgiving
