First off, I attempted the search function and came up short. My apologizes if this has already been addressed (and I'm sure it has, I just can't find it).
I seem to recall that the exhaust manifolds for the 460 in a 79 4wd are unique? Are the headers also unique in that headers marked for a 79 2wd 460 won't work? Or am I completely wrong and fabricating memories again? I see a very select few that are marked for 4wd and they are outrageously priced.
my current project is de-smogging a 460 from a 83 RV to put it back into my 79 f150. The heads on the current 460 got cracked when the manifold warped and pulled away. I might keep the block of that one and rebuild it with performance parts at some point
I haven't actually tried to reinstall yet, but visually the exhaust tubes look to be in the same place and orientation on both vehicles... can I just use 2wd headers?
460 NEVER came from the factory in a 1979 4wd. Now YES you can get from the factory a 460 in a 1979 2wd. And yes I believe that car and truck exhaust manifolds are different. Car ones are shorter and cause some 460 swap into a 4wd 1979 issues, that people fix by torch notching the frame, especially on the passenger side near the frame vin.
AFAIK 1979 2wd 460 truck exhaust manifolds are longer and exit a little bit further back and work way better.

Thank you! This was the type of insight i was looking for! If i understand correctly, it sounds like a 2wd truck to 4wd truck is a simpler swap than trying to take a 2wd car to 4wd truck? If so I should be okay with what I have (83 rv going to 79 4wd)? The people on this forum are a wealth of knowledge and I thank you all for your input.
Well make note of how your oil pan is set up. Front or rear sump? I bet front sump for a 2wd RV. And for a 4wd you can get away with a front sump, but you CAN hit the pan with the front axle pumpkin if you off road it hard. At least the PO of my 4wd 78 F250 with a 460 swap in, and a front sump oil pan did just that.
