My truck came with the narrow chrome rubberized cord/strip in the seal. Would there be any issue if I replaced the seal with the plain seal, no cord/strip? Thanks!
Mine had the chrome plastic mylar lock strip new, I had replaced the rubber and lock strip in '89, and most recently in 2022 we tried like three different ones (rubber seal) and where that lock strip inserts the rubber is thinnest, and after every new one tore at that last corner ... I bought a solid rubber seal and have no tears & no leaks ... and no lock strip to shrink or peal to just white in places.
I pitched the new lock strip after seeing that the chrome mylar wrinkled just unrolling it too.

Well I have a couple hours in it and still no go, and the chrome mylar is already peeled like in places, so I have decided to just let him order a solid, no chrome strip one and try again. He said he liked them better anyway. I had gone with the lock strip kind first because was what was in it OEM, but then when the mylar goes south, turns white, looks like crap, not to mention it shrinks over time.
At least I made it look no worse.
The LMC was as good as the Premier it seems, the Premier might have been softer. Glass guy says there will not be any such issue with the solid Premier that he gets.
07-10-2022: Solid rubber is at the glass shop, Eddie is gonna do it in the morning after I drop the truck off.
If I decide later that I want trim, I'll maybe stick a narrow bead of it to the glass next to the rubber He got it done 07-11-2022, looks nice.
Yes you can. but the lock strip is proper for '78 so I'm not sure why you would.
Thanks but I'm not worried about "proper", just function. It's a beater truck that is not beaten but not a money pit either. I'm just fixing a small rust area and want a new seal. I have no need for the lock strip.
My classic glass guy prefers the lock strip because they're easier to install. especially with the junk we have to make do with today. Whatever you get Precision brand fits best.
Door glass went with Carpenter
sent out my divider. Frames and had them blasted and powdered.... all Carpenter felts and rubbers Funny front windshield I went with Carpenter for wide SS and was to Sloppy, backtracked with Precision and it fit well,,,,rear solid window as well
I do have a question about procedure. I have only installed rear windows in 66-67 Fairlanes. Its done the same way with a cord. I didn't use sealer in the groove, just the seal. I see in numerous YouTube videos where people are using glazing compound, weather strip sealant, etc... Is that actually the preferred procedure to install the windshield and seal?
My first attempt at a Dentside windshield I used 3M sealer I think from seeing same video from Youtube. What a disaster. When it didn't go in the first attempt, I had real mess, it was all over everything. Ended up wiping all the compound out of the seal and starting over with no sealant. If you had an area that was compromised or maybe a dab for insurance at the top corners you could, but otherwise it was not necessary at least in my case, though I did have a perfect condition pinch weld. I had the wide stainless which complicates the install for sure.

when I did my rear I ordered glass from LMC and I can’t remember if they included sealer with it or if I ordered it separate but I didn’t end up using any. Didn’t see any from the factory. I started to use it but like you it started making a huge mess if I put some in the gasket before installing. I considered running around the gasket with a trim tool and squirting some all around because I do worry about water getting between the gasket and cab lip even if it doesn't actually leak. I may still do it one day
putting the wide SS trim on it slides in to sorta like a dovetail joint,,,,no sealant. Maybe I sprayed silicone for sliding the Crome trim in,or Dawn Soap......the tape holds that trim from popping out of your dove tail,,,,because the trim is installed before the window is installed, and you handling the window if you accidently pop that trim loose your starting all over again .Bummer ...... After the install tape slid right out (soap) Still used a rope which probably made the tape to slide right out.....When completed I shot some 3M black window sealant in corners. side note I have a co worker with a Bump. He took his wide SS to glass shop,,,When he returned they told him they couldnt install it so they installed a non_molding rubber with his new glass. He lived with it

My 76 had the chrome in the rear window and still has it in the windshield. I screwed with it for two days trying to get it installed WITH the the trim. Finally gave up but kept the trim just incase. Windshield still has it, I need a windshield. Really hoping when I get it replaced the shop can reinstall the chrome trim. Feel like it loses a lot of character losing both
