300ci acceleration problem

Hello,

I have a 1990 F-150 2WD, 300ci, auto, 151K miles. About 3 weeks ago, while driving, the engine developed a miss on acceleration. Within 1 day of driving I could barely get the truck up to 55mph. The miss is only occuring on acceleration (in park or on the road).

I changed the plugs and wires and the fuel filter. After that I couldn't keep the truck running for more than 30 secs.

Within an afternoon of dicking around with vacuum lines and checking the fuel filter for the proper direction and checking the lines for blockage, the truck just died. Starter would turn, but not fire the motor.

After much checking I figured it was the coil. I replaced that last night. Now it starts again, but will only run when I have my foot feathering the pedal, and it misses BAD on reving the engine.

After reading some old posts, I suppose it could be the fuel pump and or regulator. Is my thinking correct? or could it be something else? If it is the pump, where can I get a cheap one? (this is my winter beater that I have had for years)

We just got snow this morning and I am still driving my convertible

Thanks in advance!
Mike B

I would put an ignition control module on it and see what happens.

Ok, where is that on the truck? How much does one cost? More importantly what does it do? By the name, I assume it controls the ignition. Does it tell the coil or the distributor what to do? (I hate electronics)

Thanks again,
Mike B

Maybe the fuel pressure should be checked and the codes pulled.

Definitely test BEFORE buying any parts. Buy a $12 Haynes manual, a $10-50 multimeter, and a $35 fuel pressure gauge (Sears sells a good one) and DIAGNOSE before WRENCHING. The Haynes manual has a straightforward procedure for testing the ignition system that will DEFINITELY determine if you have a fault in it, and exactly which part is faulty. It even has pictures of how to attach the meter and what readings you should get.

Pulling the codes is a good idea, too, and here's how - you only need a paperclip. Here's the code list.

Hey Steve,

I have the manual and the multitester. (That is how I knew that the coil was dead)

What I was looking for was WHAT should I test for this symptom? I am going to look for the ignition control module and test that tonight. Thanks for the heads up on the Sears fuel pressure tester. (another tool for the box )

Anybody else have any suggestions for what to test?

Thanks in advance,
Mike B

Brand new muffler 3 months ago and the exhaust shop said the cat was good. Which I thought was weird, cuz you know how they always try to sell you crap that you don't need

Oh well. I don't want to take it to the local shop, but I am running out of time (snow is coming very soon)

let me know about any other ideas,

Mike B

if it is a tfi ignition it will have the ignition module sticking right on the side of the distributor. it will be held on by two bolts. it should be gray with some wires coming from it. it should not cost too much. it is often that these modules go out.

So mine is on the dizzy? I didn't get to work on it last night, but I have to tonight! I will start checking there.

just one more question, COULD this be fuel related? If I test out the module tonight and it is fine, then I should check the fuel pressure, correct?

Thanks again for ALL the help,
Mike B
