Big Power

Hey guys Thax for letting me join
Fords have always been my engine of choice but mostly small blocks in grandas and LTD in the 80's
But now that I'm retired looking to go a different direction I have came across a couple of early 460/429 engines and want to build some big Hp for my jet boats
Looking to hit the 100-110 mph
I''ve been looking at a few stroker kits and would like to get into the 700 HP range turning about 6800-7000k range with 2 1050 cfm carbs
I do have a good set of Pro Comp heads
just looking for some ideas on deck height and rotating assembly
I'm not worried about pump gas VP110 will work

are the heads new in the box ,or have you had them checked out by a good engine builder.can you find a proper matching tunnel ram intake for your heads .don't do any machine work until you have all the main parts.get good rocker arms ,and measure for the proper length pushrods when the heads are on the engine . do you have a good engine builder locally ?

This is dated, but I'm sure the formula isn't much different.

That site is all 460 all the time. Most 460 guys here want to try to get to 10MPG vs. 700 HP.

A 557 or 545 will make 700 horsepower at a little bit over 6000rpm with high compression and a solid roller camshaft pretty easily with an early regular production head that has some porting work. The thing about boats is that the exhaust side is nearly always a compromise(water cooled) and this eliminates the tuned exhaust effect from a header so you won't have that to help make torque.

heads are 2.08 intake but going to put in 2.19 valves same as exhaust the headers are 2.250 over transom dry runners cam will be some were around .620- .680 lift I know the 429 had a shorter stroke
I'm not worried about fuel I look at it like this HP is like having a fat kid you still have to feed him

sounds like fun, BUT race motors in boats are not NO WAKE zone friendly, as to over 100 on the water, i can first hand say being in a wreak is not friendly on ones body.

this is a 231 mph run

Lift for a typical roller cam with the duration that you'll need to make 700 horsepower will be around .730 lift which isn't a big deal or rough on parts and it will run to 7000rpm with moderate spring loads. A dry header will be much better than a water cooled one for sure when it comes to power.

Your power numbers seem attainable I just would like to add that I noticed you had mentioned "early" in your post. In my opinion this power level would likely benefit from later style block which would have more support in the piston area due to deeper cylinder walls, as well as these blocks seem to offer better support for stroker modification.

It is true that the D9TE production block has a cylinder wall that's about .200 or so longer than any other production block. Why that was done will remain a mystery and it will probably help a little bit on a 4.500 stroke/ 6.700 rod combo. The A460 blocks are all made with that length of cylinder wall.
