I’m prepared to get called stupid for this one. Last week my left rear axle on my 64 2wd f100 fell off while driving, the old bearings just came loose, and yes I ignored some noises by turning up the radio, I was driving it to a friends shop and made it about 800 feet away (of course). I don’t have a bearing press and was looking to already replace the gears for better highway speeds and new gears plus the bearings and proper tools puts me in a little deeper than I’d prefer. I found a 98 explorer rear end, disc brakes, leaf springs, seems like it could be a good deal to add less wear and higher gears (which I was looking to do in the future later), what issues would I run into? I’m unsure about how the pinion yoke would fit to the drive shaft since it’s meant for a nine inch, I’m new to rear end stuff so any help is good help, if anyone has anything to point out or educate me on it’d be much appreciated. I’ve looked up information but it may be too specific of a question.
You would be much better off repairing the rear you have now.
Putting an Explorer 8.8 in means your wheel track will change slightly but that won't be a problem since you will be buying new wheels anyway sine the lug pattern is different. You will have to remove the spring pads and the shock mounts and relocate them. And the biggie if you still have front drums a disc rear is totally incompatible with that combination. If you have front disc's you will need to adapt a master cylinder that is for a disc/disc brake system and re-plumb everything with the proper proportioning valve. There is more but that should be enough to think about.
If you can find an old fashioned mom and pop local auto parts store, they may have a press that will fit your bearing for you if you buy one from them. That's the way business used to be done when selling auto parts was an actual profession instead of a place for high school kids to learn how to talk to actual people in a chain store. Parts were sold out front and machine work was done in back.
hopefully the op has a napa nearby that still presses bearings unlike advanced or autozone stores that don't around me, the 9.0 ford is a simple to rebuild rear unlike what one needs to go though with any integral design rear from any of the big three .
Gentlemen, pressed on bearings are more than just a Ford thing. They are still common on a lot of new vehicles. Any good mechanic shop should be able to remove and install a wheel bearing.
