The type 2 will not fit 78-79 or newer 16.5 wheels because they' have 12 1/4" nubs. so those wheels have to be quite rare, for that matter 16.5's were pretty rare until the late 70's.
I wish I could find 16" wheels that type 12 caps would fit on for my '79. but my search has fount they're unobtainium. I thought about welding and shaping the nubs up enough they would work and I might still do that.
I can confirm that type 2 will fit 90s era E250 8 lug van wheels, which are 16" wheels so they are easier to find tires for. They are also an inch wider, no more pizza cutters
I've got pre 1977 hubcaps(#2) on a set of 1996 F250 OEM rims. I had to use an after market set of lug nuts on the rims to take up the 1/2" to 9/16" difference in the lug size. I cut the centers out of a pair of the caps to fit the D60 hubs.
They fit like they were made for it.
I said type 12 caps won't fit 16'" wheels because they're 12 5/16". and that's what 16.5's use at least post 1978. and all 3 sets of the type 12's I have are that.
But I see type 12's for sale listed as 12" , which would fit 16" wheels. can anyone verify this as correct?

They're 7". Most older ones are 6". when buying them be sure to check because some later ones have no nubs for hub caps.
Type 2 caps will fit them, type 12 will not. (Yea was in the out building today pulled out some original Ford /Firestone rims 16 inch x 6 inch The ones I have on my truck now are the OBS so they are 7inch x 16 Great to know,,looking eventually to put 35's bfg on the obs rims .The tires that came with these rims are 285 x 75 which are not bad as well height wise. any advice always appreciated )
