I finally put the engine in and got it running over the weekend. However what I have been led to believe that early Fords did not hava a ballest resistor or a resistance wire is not true. What I found is a resistance wire feeding the stock coil. I now have to find a 12 volt sorce at the switch. Does anyone know which wire on the egnition switch is direct 12 volts? It is a '71 390. I will post some pictures as soon as I take some. Thanks
billemc,
On my 69 the resistor wire, which is a really faded orange wire, runs to the same ignition terminal as the red/yl and yellow wires run to. If you need more detail than that let me know I'll take a closer look.
Rab, I put a Mallory dist. on it and Mallory says to use a ballast resistor in the hookup. The connector on the firewall had 2 wires going to one terminal which went to the origional coil. The large wire (color faded) is (I think) a resistance wire. The other wire is sort of red. In the run position the large wire spplies about 9 volts to the coil. In the start position the redish wire hits the coil with 12+ volts. I need the 12 volts all the time, so I am looking for that source. I am sure some of these folks have had this issue come up and could advise me. Thanks for the comeback.
I think I have a terminal in the fuse block that is switch on power. You may have to use a test light on the swich wiring to find a suitable wire and just use a relay to carry the voltage. It seems like I found a switch on power lead under the hood on my 72 when I wired in the duraspark.
Willow, I checked the arquives yesterday and found a post that someone used the resistance wire to energise a relay to switch the 12V. That seems like a good idea. I will research that next time I get to work on the truck. At this time is is to cold in San Antonio to be out working on anything. It will probably only reach the low 60's today. 30's at night 60's days thats winter is south Texas. :-)
