I was looking at installing a performance coil in my 83 F-150 4.9L. I was leaning towards one of the Accel coils, but was curious as to your suggestions. Additionally, I know that with the hotter coil, you need to regap your plugs, but how much. Also, would anyone recommend a different distributor/cap/rotor assembly for a hotter coil? Any suggestions would be great.
I just ordered an Accel coil for my 86 f150 EFI 302. I'll let you know how it does in a week or so. I also got the Accel cap and rotor because my Ford cap is pretty much gone after 25,000 miles. I got the Accel because it has brass inserts.. Motorcraft has aluminum. People here are saying the brass will last longer. I think you should use regular plugs and just gap them 10 thou wider.
I got the Accel coil and put it in. The reason I bought it was it specs out similar to the factory specs in my Haynes manual. Manual says .3 to 1 ohm primary and 8k ohms to 10k on secondary. The Accel is .3 and 8.8K. The coil I had in the truck was .3ohms and 7.8K. Running the truck right now with 2 year old plugs and motorcraft cap gapped to stock, .044. I'm questioning the reason to regap plugs wider like about .055, when this coil is so close to factory specs? Info from Accel says their coil is about 33% more energy, but I'm thinking it isn't, it's just a good coil. Truck runs good, not really noticably better. If anything, it idles better. Got some new plugs and rotor cap but haven't put them in yet. Waiting to get closer to my "smog check" in March to do this and debating what to gap the plugs at.
