I have an 1993 E350 that is in need of rebuilding. Body is shot, but motor and trans is pulled and sitting my shop. I want to install this in my 1984 F150. I don't see a viable option to change to carb with aftermarket intakes, so has any body done a similar swap with the old OBD1 computer system with any luck?
P.S. - This is going to be a work truck, not a hot rod or show stopper.
Not just the intake manifold - the EFI heads have a quite different intake port than carb heads. The exhaust ports are also EFI-specific, so either use the stock cast iron manifolds or use EFI-specific headers.
HOWEVER, there is an carb adapter out there that bolts on in place of the EFI upper swan-neck to use the EFI lower and heads. The EFI lower flows about as well as an Edelbrock performer.
As for computer compatibility, I couldn't tell you. The E4OD is computer controlled, but there are aftermarket stand-alone transmission controllers. The E4OD also does not support a speedometer cable that I am aware of...
If you have the entire vehicle you can swap the donor pieces into your 1984 F150. It will not be easy, but would allow you to not invest in an expensive transmission controller. On the other hand you will still lose the mechanical drive to operate the odometer/speedometer in the 1984. If you were willing to source a 1991 or earlier E4OD that would allow you to keep the mechanical odo/speedometer. Another option is going big on the project and swap to 4WD using a 1991 or earlier transfer case which also has the function to drive a mechanical odo/speedometer. That way you can keep the 1993 E4OD.
Definitely not plug-n-play any way you look at it.
