i have a motorcraft 2100 carb and when i a driving my car its ok. but as soon as my car warms i can hear a crackling noise . i think it is predetonation. my timing is set correctly. i was wondering if it could be something to do with my carb. If my carb was running too rich woukld i have this problem because as soon as igo above 30 miles an hour it goes away. thx.
Pinging can be caused by either fuel/air mixture (too lean, not too rich) or too much ignition advance. You really need to identify the exact circumstances when it occurs.
There are various metering systems in the carb that interact to regulate the mixture under different conditions.
In the distributor, there are vacuum and mechanical advance systems that determine ignition timing advance, either together or separately, under different conditions.
Can do describe a little more specifically when you hear the noise? Is it when accelerating? Accelerating light or hard? When cruising at steady speed? When engine load increases (like trying to maintain speed up a hill)? Does it vary with vehicle load (e.g., when towing)? Have you noticed any difference with higher octane fuel?
Also, which engine do you have? What is the base ignition timing now?
