leaking carb

'73 f-100, 390, 2-bbl
Motorcraft 2100

Been getting really(!) bad mpg. Did standard tune-up. No good. Then........
Came out of store tonight and smelled gas from under hood. In front of carb, on top of manifold was fresh gas. I check all screws, etc. and all are still tight. No broke hoses, etc. Guy at work says I should try replacing "accelerator pump"(?) before thinking about rebuild/replacement.
My question is: Is this something a novice with few "good" tools can/should do and if not what is the est. (ball park) $ amount to have this done by a shop?
Much appreciation for any help given.

was the truck kind of hard to start?....and chug a little bit?....I have the same set-up and had the same thing happen to me. My float was stuck open...I just took a screw driver and TAPPED (not banged) on the float bowl of the carb a couple of times. This would be the front of the body of the carb. Do this and then start the truck...and repeat a couple of times if needed.

If this doesn't do it...you will probably have to tear into the carb...these carbs are pretty straight forward, you should be able to figure it out. I paid like $35 for a kit to rebuild mine, and I wouldn't imagine a shop would charge you more than 2 hours to do it.

BTW-I am getting 9 mpg with my 390
