In reference to the manual hubs on my 1987 Bronco, has anyone changed out the factory hubds to an aftermarket type? I know this was the only year Ford designed the hubs the way they did.
sorry, i dont know that much about them but i remember hearing that if you want to change any of it you have to replace everything down to the axle (spindles up) sounds like fun dont it?
I think your looking at it the wrong way, if that where my case, that would go down on my list of reasons to go with a SAS! which will go on my truck once the frontend fries out on me (i have not ever checked the spindles or bearings....yikes!!)
It's pretty easy & cheap to swap the whole axle to an earlier (if you want to go that way) or later ('89-94 w/manual hub locks would be the easiest) Dana 44 IFS. There are plenty of people willing to let them go cheap in good condition because they think a solid axle will magically make the truck better off road.
Thanks for the idea on the axle. I guess I could have been a little more specific. What happened was the plastic **** on the hub melted. (Don't ask how.) The hub itself still works fine, I just can't lock it. I sure hate to go to all of that trouble for a piece of plastic. The folk's at the Ford dealer said I would have to replace the whole thing, since that one piece couldn't be changed. I haven't tried to take it apart yet, so I don't even know if a new **** can be put on.
I lost that plastic piece too and fortunately found one (the whole hub unit) at a junk yard. When I get the money I'm gonna change out the axles so I can install aftermarket hubs.
Some Ford engineer back in 87' musta fell on his head. I was so pissed when I found out that my hub system was a proprietary part only made in that year!
