I was backing up a heavy trailer tonight, I always use 4x4 in reverse, but actually started getting stuck this time. The driverside front tire would not spin in reverse, I was pushing 35k up a hill. The rear end started spinning sideways, like it was in 2wd. I took it out of 4x4 and put back in, locked the hubs as I thought auto may not be working. Still the same thing, but there is a little mud on the passenger tire, so I believe it was spinning.
i thought the front diff was locked? So my driverside should have spun, it always has in the past when I have been pulling up a gravel hill. I backup this hill 3-4 times a week with 35k behind it, always use 4x4 high and you. Can feel the front pushing, the rears never spin. This time though my passenger side was in the dirt, and both the driverside front and rear was on compacted gravel . I have never had the rear end fish tail when backing up in 4x4. The drivers tire didn’t even try to spin.
There is no locker in the front axle, it is an open differential. Yes the auto hubs often fail to engage, locking them in manual is always a good Idea.
An open differential sends more power to the wheel spinning faster, which is exactly what you don't need in your situation. Sometimes, you can lightly apply the brakes when a wheel starts spinning. That often stops the spinning wheel and evens out the torque distribution.
Try using 4wd low. I used to have the same problem backing a trailer uphill in slick conditions. In low range, the lower gearing plus some likely computer power or throttle response changes, and I don't have near the problems spinning tires. I also did the 2wd lo mod and usually don't even need 4wd at all in most cases.
