I read that a GM truck with a 4L60E should be kept out of overdrive when towing 2000 pounds or more to avoid burning the torque converter lockup clutches. Is the same true for a 4R75E? I monitor ATF temp on a ScanGauge and I haven’t seen 200*F, if that’s an indication of how hard the transmission is working. It drops to third or second on its own. I take it out of OD when it hunts or shifts frequently because of terrain or traffic. Otherwise I keep OD on.
I understand there’s a speed sensor that monitors slip but I don’t know if the logic is meant to prevent wear or throw in the towel when it’s worn.
Additionally, does this apply to carrying 2000 pounds in the van with no trailer? 12 aboard or 8 and a week of luggage is easily 2000 pounds.
I don't know about that trans in specific. But I think generally Ford OD automatics can tow in OD. If the clutch stays locked and you're not hunting, then keep it in OD. Otherwise downshift.
Likewise, most OD autos will lock up in D or OD. Likely not in any gears lower than that though.
