Engine Sputter!! Help!!

I own a 2000 Xcursion V-10. The truck has 70,000 miles on it and runs like a top EXCEPT for this low-RPM sputter i get from time to time. Around 1500 RPM the engine often sputters especially if im towing a trailer. I changed fuel filter but this didnt help. Mechanic said plugs were fine. Any ideas?? Ive got a 1800 mile vaction coming up and have to get it straight by then!!!
Thanks

Engine Sputter!! Help!!

Hello,
I am in no way a mechanic, however I am an Ex fan and owner. I also have a 2k v10 Ex. I would personally recommend a fuel injector cleaner, I have had good experience with the Valvoline brand. Also highly recommend a K&N air filter. I am sure there are a number of other responses in this group that will help.

Love my Ex,
Scott

Engine Sputter!! Help!!

drinXsgas,

I love your user name!

When was the last time you had your tranny fluid changed?

Does it sputter like you described in Park or Neutral? Or is it just when you have a load on it?

What happens when it sputters? Loss of power (obviously) but does the truck shake or jerk or is it just stumbling, engine wise?

Does it happen when you're ON the gas? Decelerating? At any other RPM?

How's the idle?

How's the air cleaner?

Hit "reply with quote" so that you can answer the questions...

Hope I can help!

OK...it only sputters when moving and only at low RPM (about 1200-1500) RPM. When it sputters, the engine just stumbles. I dont think it is the tranny sputtering...definately the engine. It only happens when Im on the gas..not decelerating.
It seems to idle fine. I havent checked the air filter but will. Thanks

Since it happens only when you're on the gas it makes me think that the tranny could be causin' the problem. Not for sure of course...It happens at the same RPM and ALL gears?

Engine Sputter!! Help!!

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 19-Mar-02 AT 11:52 AM (EST)]No, not really. It doesnt always do it and not in all gears. I cant say for sure what gears it does it exactly. I dont drive it enough to remember but I'll try and pay closer attention next time. (Wifes vehicle of course). I'll also try some injector cleaner. Any other ideas??

OK..just talked to wife who says she really notices it when going up hills. It just feels like its not getting enough fuel. I'll also have to watch the RPM gauge maybe to see what it says.

Engine Sputter!! Help!!

After driving the X a few times and talking to the wife more, it appears that the sputter only happens in OD. This leads me to belive now that it is the tranny. So now what? How long will it last? It really isnt that noticeable when u drive it and not something that would really bother me. I just wonder if it will get worse.
Any suggestions??

Thanks

Engine Sputter!! Help!!

Well since your torwue converter is locked in OD it sounds as if maybe it is slipping or something. I would have it checked out just to be on the safe side.

If it were me, I'd go see a reputable, independant transmission shop. I'm sure there are tests that confirm or deny the existance of tranny/TC problems.
