Odd line

So I removed my vacuum pump to replace it and found a small hose connected to a nipple behind the AC compressor. It was tucked up under the fuel filter, not connected to anything and there is not anything obvious it connects to. What is it?

I should have said the hose seems to come off the engine, not the AC pump.

You said it was tucked under the fuel filter? May have been for the drain on the bottom of the fuel filter. At least one of my trucks, can't remember which one, had a line attached to a plastic thing that could clip to the filter drain. It went over an inch or so, then bent down for a few inches and I think connected to a thin metal or plastic line that went further down along the engine. You could put a cup under the line, open the filter drain and easily collect what came out, instead of it trickling all over the engine.

It could also be a part of the fuel return system, though I would think it would have diesel leaking out of that was the case?

What year, and truck or van? I seem to think AC compressor would be on the opposite side of the engine than the fuel filter, but I've only worked on truck engines, I know some things were moved around for vans.

The OE water separator was under the vacuum booster and behind the AC compressor on my Bullnose truck. The vehicle speed system (cruise) is also on the driver's fender. Could be related to that.

when new my 88 had a drain hose on the valve under the water separator. that is most likely what it is.

I just got the new vac pump in and started it up. The hose has no flow in either direction that I can detect.

So, after a little more keyboarding, I find that there is supposed to be a system in place to sense water and drain it. That is probably what the line is. Now, I have a large Baldwin? fuel filter in place and it does not a have any water separation area or ports on the bottom. IS it desirable to have the original system or does it matter? Strange a fire dept or fire marshals group changed it so much without a reason I would think.

in 496,000+ miles, i have NEVER had enough water in the filter so set off the water in fuel light.
i still use a napa filter with sensor and drain, but never used the drain.

That Baldwin filter you installed will work better than the OE water separator anyways.

When I first bought my Bullnose truck I pulled the ring on the OE water separator and caused a NO START air intrusion problem that I didn't solve for a week!

Ordered a filter today, I have no idea how long the Baldwin has been in place. When they looked it up at the parts store, the first one that came up was $65!!!! I settled for a Motorcraft for $25. Don't want to start an oil type thread......is there a preference in fuel filters?

is the motorcraft fuel filter you got a two piece design, or a one piece?
the factory filter has the fuel filter on top and a screw on water separator on bottom.
most people replace the two piece design with a one piece unit.

Good call, I got it home and opened it up and it is some kind of dual filter with a black base. I am returning it and getting just a filter. I am taking the numbers off the Baldwin and trying to find one.

DOH! Right you are.

You can get Wix 33417 if you want a one piece fuel filter, or Wix 33217 if you want to stay with the 2 piece design. Wix 33617 if you want a single piece with the Water in Fuel connector.

I'd stick with Motorcraft, Wix or Baldwin over a parts store cheapie.
