TPMS disassembled in tire
Lurking around here for nearly forever and always like the info I find. Today I found a reason to post.
Late 2021 I traded in the F150 for a used 2018 F250 at my local Ford dealer so I could tow the camper easier, and found success. At the time I was shown a receipt from the dealer indicating new tires had been put on the truck by the dealer. This was part of the dealer showing what they had in the truck during negotiations.
Fast forward to now, the TPMS units are failing and most likely this would be understandable for a 2018. So I'm breaking the bead on the wheels to change the TPMS units out without dismounting the tires on my tire changer. Once the bead is broke, I can get my hand in there and change the units. Done this many times before and am fully aware of how to break the bead and not tear up the sensors.
What I am finding is the TPMS sensors are in pieces and appear to have been in pieces for some time. Once found loose in the tire, I have been dismounting the tire to clean all the parts out and inspect for possible damage.
The funny thing is that not all the parts are in there. The circuit board and battery is in all of them but other bits of the plastic housing are just not there.
Would the dealers employee have broken the sensors with the tire machine and just tossed the sensors back in the new tires? Really?
The bigger question
Do these just break on their own?
Curious about others experiences.
Thanks
I have a 2019 F350, 80K miles, on my 2nd set of tires. Still running the original sensors without a problem. My Fusion is the same but on its 3rd set of tires with original sensors.
Good luck,
Mike
