Should I be concerned about this small blemish on my tire sidewall?
Here is the thing. I got the tires online and had them installed at a dealer. I only had the truck out for about 20 mins before I noticed it so I'm pretty sure it was caused by the dealer. Not 100% sure though as it might have happened during shipping and I just didn't notice. Anyway I attached a picture. The tires are Cooper STT Pro 270/70/18. What do you think?
The bottom part under the I looks like a slit from a knife and the thin layer of rubber folds back slightly.
If it happened in shipping, the installer should have noticed.
If the dealer did it mounting the tires, they should get you a new tire.
I don't know how you resolve this, as you didn't notice it until you were driving long enough to have had this happen on the road.
That does not look like a serious cut to me, but I would not want to drive on it at high speed or long trips.
You know that dealer isn't going to admit they cut your tire.....
Serving suggestion: Run it, watch for signs of deterioration. As your piggy bank allows, buy another one and retire (so to speak) this one to spare duty. If you off-road, you need two spares anyway, right?
the bigger question is how deep?
the sidewall is around 1/2 inch thick.
if it is a 1/4 inch flap, i would consider spare status. if it is a 1/32 flap i would not worry about it.
I took it to the dealer today. They assured me 100% it would not affect the structure or performance of the tire whatsoever. That was my biggest concern. To me not it's just a cosmetic thing. I think I will buy another one anyway and use this one as a spare. The dealer said they would change it out and install on another rim for free so that's good. Thanks for the input guys.
Just for clarification, it isn't even 1/32" deep. It is very minor. Hard to see in the picture though.
i would not worry about it. i have seen flaps that small on new tires that were "defects", a small piece of "cutoff" rubber that bonded to the sidewall.
