Loud whining noise when coast in any gear in my 49 F1. Similar to noise you hear when you down shift. Being told its a tranny problem. Before I pull it Could it be a differential problem? Low oil or bad gear?
Could be. Which transmission do you have? Non-synchro trannies make more noise normally than helical gear boxes. Does the noise sound like it's coming from the floor, or behind?
Both light duty and heavy duty 3 speeds were floor shift in '49. Either way, you should not be hearing unusually loud noises from the transmission. You may have an issue.
Bob,years ago I had a whin in my truck and pulled the transmission and nothing was found wrong.Come to find out it was the rear end.An old mechanic said he put some shims in it to quieten it up.It did help but still has a light whin and been doing it for 40 years! Russ
Thats what im afraid of. I dont want to pull the tranny just to find out nothing is wrong with it. Was the noise you had similar to what you hear when you downshift and coast after letting up on the clutch? Thats what Im hearing and its quite loud.
When you say coasting in gear are you.meaning deaccelerating with the clutch out and in gear? Or do you mean the trans is in gear and the clutch is depressed? And you say there is no noise when accelerating in gear, what about when maintaining a speed in gear? If I'm understanding you correctly I say it is a diff issue. I and I'm sure others need a little more clarification to help diagnose the issue.
its in gear and clutch is not depressed. Im coasting. I get the noise. If i put it in neutral and and clutch not depressed and coast no noise. If I put it in any gear with clutch depressed and coast no noise.
