I had the same problem but the existing one I reconditioned and was too short
you can order just the backplate from LMC and switch components
It's not expensive at all

It's not expensive at all, they were the only ones who had that option as well
Here's a GM plug I have. Would it work for you? All the GM plugs I have measure the same. I don't have any spare Ford plugs, so no measurements on those.
I bet that would do it. I’ll admit my measurements weren’t exactly precise. I just used a simple tape measure. I need to get me one of them fancy micrometers you cooler guys use.

Funny you should mention it. Mahr makes really good machinist tools and so does Mitutoyo of course.
I picked these up last week. It's a buyer's market for quality machinist's tools right now. Shop carefully and some good bargains are to be found.
Yes there is a 14 pin for clusters with out all 4 gauges and 18 pin are for clusters with all 4 gauges. Even in American Autowire wire harness instructions it shows a white 18 pin plug and how to wire it for 73-74 and a gray 18 pin plug and how to wire it for 75-79. There are 2 different 18 pin plugs.

There are not 2 different 18 pin plugs for your truck according to Ford there's just the 14 and 18 pin type 23 "Sleeve" or plug shell. You have the 18 pin which I think has been identified so that leaves the 14 pin "D3AZ- 14489-C" which I pointed to above and when that part # is put into your favorite search engine will give you multiple opportunities to purchase this evasive part.
74 crew, if you think the GM plug I have pictured above will work for you, it is yours for the cost of shipping. Should be less than $7, with tracking.
The Mitutoyo caliper in the picture is one of two I bought at a car parts swap, a 12" & 24". The 24" is mint, the 12" is very good. I want to say I paid $20 or $30 for both. I usually resell that stuff, but these are so nice I kept them.
