Hey guys looking for a direction to start. 1998 4.0L ranger xlt 272,000miles. Pulled in the driveway and noticed some rusty/muddy looking coolant leaking from what looked like a bolt on the drivers side going through what I’m guessing is the water pump housing. I’ve never replaced the water pump in my ownership. I’ve seen with some quick googling that the 3.0 has a know. Issue with the timing chain cover leaking. Not sure if the 4.0 has a similar problem. Based on where it’s located i think I’m going to need to tear into it just to get a better look at where it’s coming from. Just wondering if someone has had a similar issue. In regards to the condition of the coolant, I haven’t flushed it in quite some time. The coolant in the reservoir looks good but I haven’t checked the radiator yet. Waiting for it to cool off. Thanks for any help you can provide
kefrko,
Sounds like you know what is in store..... yeah, it's a job, but very do-able.
Order up a water pump and round up some new coolant. Give your radiator and heater hoses a serious eye and if in doubt, change it out. Do a super job of flushing all the mud out of the system and reservoir. They have provided a 25+ service life already - time to freshen them up.
am not familiar with the 4.0L engines, so I'll ask - is this the time to change out the timing chain/gears?
Yeah I’m not sure. So I pulled the fan off and flushed the radiator a couple of times. In between I would start it up to cycle some water through and get more of the rusty coolant out. Let it come up to temp with the fan off to see if I could get a better look at what was leaking but couldn’t see anything. So I’ll flush it until the water runs clear and do a new water pump, t-stat and hose since the fan is off then put it back together and see if that did the trick
