Speedo Sensor Wierdness

Hey all,

I've got a 1991 F250 300 i6 with a manual tranny. Someone rigged up the way the speed sensor is clamped and I'd like a pic of someone's that's correctly installed. Weird thing is this: my speed sensor has the regular kind of sensor and clip that's mounted on the tail housing extension but before mounting directly to it, it first mounts onto a plastic circular piece (housing?) which is then slides into a larger opening in the tail housing extension itself with a second clip that holds the plastic disk (housing?) in place. It's the clamp on this plastic disk that's been rigged up. Any help would be appreciated. The Larger opening I'm referring to is like this one in the pic (stole the pic off the internet).

It's a 4 speed manual 4wd. Also, I edited my original post with a stolen pic of a tailhousing off the internet to show the larger opening I'm referring to.

You have that type of tail housing on the transmission? Did someone put in a 2wd transmission with a divorced transfer case? From the factory a 4wd truck will have the speed sensor and cable go into the tail housing on the transfer case. There is a U shaped metal retaining clip that is held in with a bolt. Can you post a picture of what you have?

I was gonna say, how is that tail gioing to bolt to a transfer case? Usually an adapter is going to be between them there

Does your transmission have a PTO cover on the side of it?

On 4wd vehicles the port for the speedometer cable/VSS sensor is mounted on the output of the transfer case.

Here are a few photos for reference:

No. The rear axle VSS is used for the RABS system only. 1992 and up the rear axle VSS is used for the RABS systems, then buffered by the PSOM for use in the speed/odometer, speed control and vehicle speed feedback to the computer.

Oh cool. thanks lol. So the his truck has a t-case and a axle mounted sensor, and if it was a couple years newer, it would just have the rear axle?

For the context of this conversation, that is correct.

OK y'all, I need to start out apologizing for my idiocy. My speed sensor / cable is at the back side of the transfer case (see pics). I'm not a great mechanic and definitely not knowledgable about transmissions so smack your forehead on my account. Let me use pictures and that'll help.

In the pic below, you can see my speed sensor / cable. It mounts directly into a round plastic housing or bushing type thing by normal means (bolt through a clip) and then this "housing" slides into a large opening with a secondary clip to hold it in place. My problem is that someone before me used what looks like a bracket normally used for electrical conduit to hold the plastic "housing" in place. However, I'd like to see how it's supposed to be clamped down and what the actual clip should look like. The previous owner mounted it with a conduit bracket and the entire plastic "housing" is poorly held and can rotate. Since the speed sensor / cable is not centered in the plastic "housing", but is offset, the speedo gear may or may not integrate with the worm drive inside the tranny, depending on how the plastic "housing" is rotated.

So, does anyone have a pic of this type of speed sensor / cable mount so I can see what kind of bracket it's supposed to have and how it should be rotated?

Clipped from Post# 7

Look closer at the photo I posted....I believe that should be a metal grommet, not plastic like yours.

Mine is designed differently than what you've posted AuroraGirl. Your Speed sensor mounts directly to the casting. The speed sensor on my tranny mounts first into a black plastic housing that itself sits in the casting of the transfer case. Where the tip of the yellow arrow is on my pic above is the seam between the plastic "housing" and the transfer case itself.
