Computer error codes

My 87 Ranger (330,000 miles!) recently began running rich at cruise and surging. Disconnecting the vacuum line at the EGR and plugging it helps.

Pulled the codes, it is displaying codes 32 (eps voltage below closed limit) and 34 (eps voltage above closed limit).

Seems odd to have both high and low voltage! Any ideas on how to proceed?

Thanks,

Have you check the fuel pressure and for gas in the fuel pressure regulator vacuum line.

Thanks for replying. I've been out of town, just checked the link.

I checked the fuel pressure, 40 pounds, and there is no fuel in the vacuum line.

Any idea what the voltage errors could mean?

By the way, I also checked the EGR valve. It just begins to open at 1 pound vacuum. The book says to check it at 5-10 pounds, but doesn't mention when it should start. It is fully open by 5 pounds.

Thanks,

Mullet

I'm not super familiar with your year of Ranger, but one thing I would be looking at would be functionality of the evaporative emission system. I would also look at the seal on the gas cap and make sure it's sound, assuming that it's a non-vented cap. Also, when you put the gas cap on, make sure it clicks a few times too so it's good and tight.

You'll need to run the pinpoint tests. I can send them to you if you enable your email.
