I need to know why my truck wont stay running. When i start the truck, it will stay running as long as i hold the switch in the start position, but when i let it go back to on, the truck stops. Could the timing affect this? (i know the timing is off, but i dont think its that bad) I have a new switch, lock cylinder, battery, and starter in it.
i know there is power at the coil because when i got the truck, i could put the key in the on position and jump the truck off the starter solenoid (long story why i had to do it this way), but where do i check for the ignition module power? in addition to this problem, when the truck is turning over/starting the carburator blows flames out. i had a friend tell me that it it a backfire through the carb due to the timing being off. is this accurate or is there another problem?

The backfiring when the engine is cold is normal, especially if your choke is not working.
I agree with Torque1st, you need to check for power at the + side of the coil with the key in "run". There is the possibility the resistor is burnt out, but check for power first.
i decided to start with the ignition switch to check for power. i have 6 prongs on it, one of which is a dummy prong. four of them have power when they are supposed to, but the purple/white wire that goes to the dual brake warning switch (according to the haynes manual) has no power. i tried the switch in every position and still got nothing on it. where is this brake switch and what exactly does it do? could this have something to do with my truck not running with the switch in the on position?
I know this is an old thread but I am curious to see if he got it running? I am getting the same problem on my F100 right now. This may sound stupid but how exactly do I check for power. I am such a moron when it comes to electricity.
