Are you sure it came with one from ford? from what I read its a mixed bag as some did and some did not even up thru 03's. The rad support should say cat or non cat.

I think the issue here is the mention of CARB standards, implying the poor truck is equipped with the California emissions package.
I was curious myself as mine was stolen off my 99 gasser. I couldent find a 7.3 cat thats CARB approved, only Federal. Thankfully I live in a no smog state. The CA CARB approved cat is $1600 or so. When I bought my truck it had a small magnaflo in it rated for 550GVW. It since was romoved and tested without and it made 0 difference in power or speed. Figure it might plug up or have melt down from the V10 being its to small.

Good to know. I personally am pro CARB - there are a gazillion people living here in high density, I don't miss the smog and burning lung feeling after playing sports or running.

That little Magnaflo must be working OK as the seller put it on the truck to smog it in a non Ca state and it passed. It really made no difference when I ran the truck with it off as was the case on several vehicles I farted around with. Only difference was that you could hardley breathe if you were standing near the truck when it was running.

What's the difference between federal and the actual CARB?
The simple answer is CARB testing. CARB requires the CAT manufacturer to submit the catalytic converter for testing to prove it will reduce NOX to CARB standards. Once it passes the manufacturer is allowed to put the CARB EO number on the converter. The test can increase the cost 3 - 4 times or more. The converter can be the same one you buy for $400 - $500 and meets Federal EPA requirements without the CARB testing.
You might try talking to a state referee if they still exist. Perhaps the fed cat is used on the ca trucks, who knows. You used to be able to get an extension or some BS if you had issues with unsmoggable vehicles.
