I have a 1974 f-600 with a 361. I need a set of heads. Since the old heads have been resurface before and do not have enough material left on the heads. I was wondering if I could use 360 heads on a 361. Since the only difference between the two is the crank, or so I have been told. Also I was thinking about putting a new aluminum Intake on it as well and I am not sure if I can use a 360 intake or if I would be better off using the old one.
You'll have to block the exhaust crossover in the center of the exhaust manifolds. That's one FE vs FT difference. There are other differences as well. What does your thermostat setup look like? Do you have a governor?
FE heads will have a larger intake valve as well, iirc.
Resurfacing normally only takes off .010 or so.. The heads to could be resurfaced several times with no problems. 360/391 heads besides being a different casting with a different exhaust crossover also come with hardened seats and sodium cooled exhaust valves.
The thermostat housing is in a rectangle box out side the intake. If I am not mistaken I believe I have two thermostats. I do not know if the truck has a governor on it or not. How would I find out? Is the top end on a 360 and 390 the same? And my last question, will putting 360 heads and intake on a 361 hurt performance, or will it even make a difference?
PS I don't care about gaining power but I don't want to lose power. I just want the truck to run again. If I make more power it's just a plus.
Thanks.
Putting the FE top end on an FT will cause you issues with the t-stat as you note. You will also have to block the FT exhaust manifold crossover or adapt FE exhaust manifolds to your truck.
The FE heads will have larger intake valves, but that may or may not change things given the cam, compression and other factors.
You can probably just as easily find another FT engine and rob the heads off it.
