That said though the wiring and connectors appear to be in good shape I agree that the broken clips allowing the wires (though stiff) running freely under the valve covers kinda bothers me. Would it be a viable option to clean and reuse the gaskets and just replace the harness or is it necessary to replace all? Only reason I ask is that I recently put about a grand in suspension work and close to another grand in cooling system overhaul and concerned that if this isn't main the problem It might be another grand if I end up also needing an IDM.

I suppose this is what it means to own one of these and I guess it is still cheaper than buying another truck that you know nothing about.
Ok well I ended up selling some tools that I had multiples of and made just enough to get the gaskets and harnesses from my local Ford dealer. They weren’t as bad as I was fearing. $330 after taxes for both sides. So after throwing all that money into the cooling system and suspension why skimp on the engine? My next question is whether I should do the 50cent mod on new harnesses before I install them?

I think they have been revised and the 50 cent mod isn’t applicable to new harnesses.

I think you are right, they added a tab making it impossible to fit the quarter in without removing it. I hope their revision works because these new harness are no fun reinstalling especially in a van! The wiring hasn’t been trained in their new positions and it’s cold out making it worse. Maybe once the warm up and become malleable they will be easier to remove and install.

What does the forum think? Would you clean these up? With the snapped plastic retainers, I'd be tempted to replace them, especially if working on a van.
Just wanted to give an update. Ended up getting all new valve cover gaskets and harnesses from Ford and installed them last night.

I test drove it on the highway and though I could tell the engine was running a little better after a sustained run of 70mph suddenly the whole rear began to shake and then suddenly lost power and had to limp it to the exit. Once the transmission downshifted and the engine got down to idle, I was able to drive it home pretty normally without any shaking or power issues.

DTC check showed glow plug faults but no IDM faults. Also before the run I did a CCT and again got no.6 fault.

Tonight I took it out again to see if the rear end shake/power loss returned and it didn't. What I did notice was a kind of pinging like when it would shift to 4th gear pretty much all the time in 4th until it was pretty warm after running on the highway for a while. After warmed up the engine was running pretty well with steady power on the highway and reduced pinging. It felt like it used to when it was running well.

Though I was happy how it was running after a longer drive on the highway I am concerned about that shake that came back last night (this happened several times a while back when I first started having power issues and I forgot about it). My instinct is that it’s either a transmission, driveshaft or rear end issue but why would it lose throttle power?

I attached 2 CSV files the first is from last night w/power loss and shaking. This happened about 2/3 of the way through after a sustained high mph run. The second CSV file was after a long run on the highway tonight when it was warmed up and running well.

I have also attached a few screenshots of the DTC faults I got today.
