1991 F205 7.3 IDI NA, 5-Speed I'm trying to figure out what my timing is set at.
Issues:
1) If i have the cold timing advance plugged in it makes the truck run bad and jerk.
2) If i use the engine break above 2600 RPM the truck starts jerking like the throttle is being pressed then lifted rapidly.
3) Its a Pensacola diesel injection pump, my 3rd from them on warranty in one year, its not a good pump.
I have a Gunson adapter and a timing light with only advance. I made sure to mark the correct point on the bracket, not the 20' ATDC mark, and I used paint pen on the harmonic balancer to mark the timing slot.
I set the truck to 2000ish RPM and with the light set at 0 degrees advance the marker on the balancer is 1/2" above the zero mark on the bracket above the balancer. If i bump up to 8 degrees of advance the slot on the balancer is now closer to the 20 degree probe mark.
Question: Does the above mean my engine is significantly advanced and I need to retard it more?
The Injection pump is already turned all the way to the driver side (Looking at the front of truck), which I believe is the max it can be retarded.
engine brake?
and pensicola pumps have a reputation about equal to a bag of garbage on the side of the road.
Engine brake -> Letting off the throttle completely when in a gear, letting the compression in the engine slow down the truck. Not like a Jake brake or anything.
sounds like a garbage injector pump if it is jerky on deceleration with no throttle.
I figured as much. I have a turbo to put on so I planned to get and R&D 90 pump when I put the turbo on. I still need to figure out how to time the injection pump though.
I got back at it and checked timing again i was running about -4 degrees retarted. I moved the IP as far as i could to advance and go it to zero degrees on timing. It probably could go further but the injection lines won't allow it, and none of the previous pumps ever had to be turned so far. I'm just going to get a new pump and go from there. I think I'll get the R&D IDI RD2-HPNA would be best in my current position since I have a turbo but won't be putting it on for a bit.
go for a stock pump. no need to get a larger one, the stock pump can be turned up plenty high to supply a turbo.
if i remember correctly, the idi timing should be set around 8 degrees advanced at 2000 prm.
if you were 4 degrees retarded, i bet your pump is 1 tooth of on the timing gears.
