shop press

Thought i would check and see if any FTE members have any experience, and suggestions about shop presses.

Looking at purchasing shop press thru discount catalog company. Shop space is an issue, and was looking at the 6 ton bench type. The catalog list 2 types, the H-frame, and the A-frame. Wondering if one has advantages over the other. Intend to use for relatively minor projects, but one never knows. Not sure the 13" span between channels on the 6 ton will be wide enough. Also, is the 6 ton press sufficient to handle majority of the projects requiring a press fitting on truck/car. The largest part i can think of would be the heads. Any press work on the block i would have done.

Any input , suggestions would be appreciated,

Thanx,
dave

We (the family of all boys..) have a press in my dads garage. My brother picked it up as a going away present from his job with Malibu Grand Prix. It is a 20-ton H-frame model and will take care of just about anything.... I would venture to say it mostly has handled light steel and we had occasion to pop a few U-joints loose. I bet a 6-ton will do just fine! Heck, it beats trying to use the vise.

I have a 20Ton from Harbor Freight. It's a live saver when you need it, but it's very seldom used and it takes lots of space so I welded casters on the base so I can move it againts the wall when not in used.

Get the stand up models. If you have to press bearings off an axle shaft you will need the length. Any press from 6T on up will do most chores. Mine is only 3T and I strain it to capacity at times but it hasn't failed me yet.
