Front Axle Question

1966 F250 4x4
standard non HD Dana 44
Started tearing down to work on brakes, one side had a spring behind the lock out hub, other side didn't. Also, one side have the drive gear spacer, the other didn't. Does the spacer keep the lock out hub where it needs to be? Does the spring push the hub outwards until engaged? One side also had a small Phillips screw holding the hub from pushing all the way out.

What lockout hubs on your truck? Early Warn, Late Warn, Dana Hub-Lok, Mile Marker, other? Pictures may help. Lots of variety of hubs and what you describe so far doesn’t sound familiar yet. Everything I know is the same left and right. Interchangeable from one side to the other. Same exact thing on both sides. Tell us more.

Here's the drawing from the Master Parts Catalog showing the exploded Dana 44 front end with both the early Warn hubs (non-HD style shown) as well as the Dana Hub-Lok hubs (HD style shown). If you see anything that looks familiar inside those hubs let us know.

Are you sure that's 1199 you are seeing? The 1199 is a spacer but no gear to it. I'm sorry, I'm not at all familiar with the hubs you have there. Others may be.

If it were me, I'd probably opt for some different hubs. I like the Warn brand and these are an original 1966 era design from Ford (not mine). Great price for what they are and comes with some paperwork it looks like. If the original instructions are not there I have one. A bit of Warn history below.

WARN Locking Hubs For 66-72 F100 F250 4x4 - NOS NEW | eBay

Founded in 1948 by Arthur Warn, Warn Industries began producing locking hubs for surplus World War II Jeeps, converting thousands into useful, on-road vehicles. Originally based in Seattle, Washington, Warn Industries' innovation revolutionized the hub industry. The WARN winch, developed in 1959, was the first recreational winch. With pioneering features such as a rugged drive train, the WARN winch quickly became the leading brand for off-road racers, avid four wheelers, weekend adventurers and hard-working ranchers.

That hub with the red dial is a Warn hub, just the not Warn Premium hub with the brass dial.
