48 F1 FRONT LEAF SPRING MOUNTS

can't find any info on 1948 F1 front leaf spring mount bushing replacement, can the mounts be removed and put back in with bolts? any tips for replacing the bushing in place would be appreciated.

The mounts stay on the frame - no need to remove them. The 21C-5348 bushings are in the "eye" of the springs. Remove the eye from the mount and press the old bushing out and the new one in. Reinstall the "eye" into the mount. You may be able to do this one eye at a time without completely removing the springs from the truck.

Ahh, I misunderstood which specific bushings you were after. This is a two piece bushing made up of two 7RC-5334-A bushings. They are press fit bushings. You should be able to do it in place without removing the hard to find 7RC-5337 bracket from the frame. It essentially boils down to pressing them out (with bushing driver, clamp/vice with spacer/sockets, a purpose bushing installer/remover tool) or cutting/drilling them out. When drilling, the trick is to not drill the whole bushing out, but to drill it to a very thin wall so that it can then be easily deformed and removed without damaging the hanger bore.

Trying to drill out that thin bushing isn't really a good idea. The better and/or preferred method would be to use a hack saw blade and carefully slice two cuts into it 180 degrees apart (ie, top and bottom) without cutting into the bracket steel, which would relieve the pressure from the press fit and allow the two pieces to be easily removed. Cleaning up the hole afterward should allow the new bushings to be pressed back into place. No need to remove the bracket from the frame. The brackets, especially the front ones, would be extremely difficult to remove from the crossmember.

Get the old bushings out. Then you can use a piece of all thread, some washers, and nuts to press new ones in. You might have to ream them slightly for the spring pin.

Before you remove the old bushings, try to freeze the new ones in your freezer a day or two before. They might shrink just a little and may slide in easier.
