You can buy a timer and have it turned on about 3 hours before you leave for work. Then the truck can sit outside in the cold all day while you're at work...
In all the years I owned my diesel 86 to 2002 I only plugged it on a hand full of times and it was so it started easier not for heat.
BTW I lived in New England and many weekends went to VT where the truck would sit Fri night till Sun even for the drive back to CT and yes some where in the neg deg numbers!
I had nowhere to plug in when in VT so you just run the glow plugs a few times and cranked till it started.
