My 2001 F-150 5.4L is misfiring. Forscan is detecting it. I did an OBD II Mode 6 test on “monitored systems” and it looks like cylinder 8 if I’m reading it correctly. I’m thinking a coil pack or two is on the way out because it doesn’t misfire all the time. It’s quite random. Is there anything else I should check?
#8 is DS in the back. Tight area to get the COP screw out...(7mm head). If the plug is good pull the boot and the spring off the coil. Clean everything up real well (contact cleaner) then a dab of die-electric grease on each end of the spring. Re-install and see how it runs. I bet 50-60% of what I thought were bad coils were just dirty springs and boots. I like Denso for coils. I keep a couple on hand...from Amazon.
I got #8 fixed up. The coil resistance was bad, the boot was swollen and cracked. The spring was rusty and the spark plug was barely finger tight. #8 had all the common plug hole issues but it seems to be better now.
