right now, the EGT probe is laying on the floor in my truck not much good there, is it?

but, to me, it feels like my 7.3 with the Hydra Tuner on 65hp moves out just as hard as the Cummins did....

I am going to get a real good test come next may.
My son and I are going to Price, UT to move my sister's stuff down to my home... he has a 2004 3/4 ton 5.9 Cummins in it.

using I-70 thru the Rocky Mtns, we will be loaded almost the same pulling double trailers each.....

I'll report on how that "test" goes come next year...
but right now, here at home, with the Cargo Trailer hooked up,
I did a test drive with it loaded with a lot of stuff, and that 7.3L moved out like there wasn't any trailer back there.
Should be a pretty good test. However, I believe an 04 Cummins was the Common Rail version of the 5.9 which puts out quite a bit more power than your old 98 Cummins. 7.3 with a hydra tows pretty good, but a common rail 5.9 will probably out-pull it. If he's got any kind of tuning on the 5.9, he will definitely out-pull a tuned 7.3.

The nice thing about a cummins is they build their power lower/ sooner. I've always liked that their power is there right around 1100 rpm IIRC. Either way, both would get the job done

I do recall the '98 Cummins would pull hard at 1100ish,
haven't pulled a heavy load yet with my 7.3 other than the Cargo Trailer last week, and I wasn't paying attention to RPM, just the torque it was providing and the speedo was climbing fast.

I can't remember if my son's '04 5.9 has any tuning on it,
he told me just a couple days ago, that he is going to order the Edge CTS-3 programmer for his 5.9 California truck... so it will have a tuner on it when we go.
he is also going to add one of those 3 quart water/methanol injection systems.

. I thought on that, and talked to Wes444 and we both agree it is not worth it for just two trips, I will never be in a position to use it like that again.

adding a water/meth setup is just more to worry about IMO. sure they help, but as you said, you won't need it again and just one more thing to deal with. The only thing you'll have to worry about on the trip is how fast you'll be able to go on some of the hills. When I tow, I don't care how slow I have to go to make it safely and there is alway's someone slower than you.
All the idiots in a hurry and only think about themselves can eat chit and just deal with it

It's also worth going slow and enjoying what mother nature has provided us with. The scenery is some of the best you can find

I've towed i70 from MO to it's end out West. Excellent scenery from Denver to i15

Also makes for some fun 5th wheel towing... The wind thru Kansas will try and shove you sideways every inch of the way till just outside Denver. Then during the climb over the Rockies you'll pass all the semis and tho Bro dozers with 30ft travel trailers that blew past you @ 80+mph thru Kansas. Seems like Brah's can't get over 30mph on climbs just like the semis. I was able to maintain 10-15mph more than them on the real steep sections 🤷🏻‍♂️

The best hand calculated mileage we ever got towing was the stretch from Denver to Arches National Park. That's because half the time you are coasting down the mountains you just climbed with the injectors silent and not firing any fuel.

Eisenhower tunnel is a sight to experience

Anyways, towing that stretch when I was bone stock in summer when it 112⁰ was a torture test on the truck. Then every time I made upgrades to the turbo it helped a little more each time. You're Ex is an auto, so not sure how it will do compared to my ZF6. You have plenty of tunes on the Hydra to try out tho, but you won't need more than about a 40hp tune loaded. Any more and it seemed like more fueling than it needed and the stock turbo couldn't breathe well enough to clean up hotter tunes
