so I probably screwed myself over? Should I remove all of them again and check? The only instructions I could find stated to have the engine at 11 o’clock position. I hope I didn’t further damage anything else
If the mark was at 11 o'clock or close to it, then it shouldn't matter how fast the rocker arms were bolted down. By the time the engine would be ready to run, the lifters would (or should) be collapsed anyway.

No telling what you've got going on.

frustrating part is I did have this noise come from the intake in the past. But it would mysteriously come around for a few minutes and then go away. Like once a month at most. It was never consistent. I just attributed it to a random misfire. Or timing was off or something cause like I said it would go away.

i was just trying to basically do preventive maintenance and figure out why my truck smokes so much on cold start. I came across a video online of a guy with the same noise out of his intake and he had a broken pushrod. So I decided to check all of mine.. here we are. Trying to fix things and I made them worse. And screw them up. .

the only other thing I did do and I just remembered is I re torqued the injector hold down bolts. I replaced my injectors in July. 120 inch pounds.

I have a tick on drivers side now too.
making me wonder if pushrod is going on me now

If you had a badly bent push rod and inserted a new one with out pumping down the lifter, valve could hit piston

none of them were badly bent at all. They were slightly bent. When I rolled them on the table. You could just hear a difference and see a slight difference
As they were rolling.

assuming we’re working with thousants of inches. I suppose when I used the electric ratchet I could have bent them. . I’m going to get new ones and replace them by hand. Hope it goes well.

Ever do a compression test?

Diesels smoke when cold due to incomplete combustion usually.

I’m going to use a buddies tester here soon

but I read that if the valves are not setting correctly the compression test could be incorrect.?

Replaced all of them again with OEM parts same noise, decided to unplug each injector with the engine running and number eight is doing nothing when I unplug it. I can do a buzz test but something is not working. I already checked the ohms with the IDM plug and it OHMed out fine.

It does not matter. Either way leave the glow plugs out until last. When ready to reinstall, put valve covers on with 2 bolts, Spin motor with key a few times to purge any and all fluids from top of pistons. Always do this if injectors or glow plugs are removed. Also make sure the timing mark is lined up with CPS (11 o'clock position) before torquing rocker arms. Good luck

it seems that I have low compression in cylinder 8 either the engines messed up now or a valve is messed up. Or both. I don’t know how it happened or what I did. I swapped #8 and #4 injector ran it and have the same issue. Guess I’m going to pull the head off. Thinking to just rebuild the dang thing. $$$ is an issue though. 😱
