Some background: 2006 single cab, 5spd, 2.3L, base model
Bought in 2007 with 40k miles on it from a oilfield company in Oklahoma, it was used to run small parts, currently has 200k miles.
I've used this truck daily, mainly to work and back and occasionally out in my grandparents pasture for chores. It has been my only vehicle, and has never left me stranded.
I'm an industrial mechanic by trade, so I do the recommended maintenance and a little extra. I rebuilt the rear end a few years ago just because I wanted to, and replaced the clutch and u-joints at the same time. I used to haul a large toolbox and went ahead an did the leaf springs and hangers as they were sagging. I've never had engine issues until now.
Yesterday I had some chattering at low speeds from the engine bay, and some clutch noise, then last night as I approached a stop light and she made some chattering noises, knocked a couple times, then the oil light came on, then it smoothed back out and the light went off...My first thought was that the oil pump is going bad, this would also explain the chattering, but wanted to get another opinion. If it is the oil pump - is there an easier way to get to it than pulling the engine?
Looks like I'm gonna have to buy or borrow another vehicle while this gets sorted.
The odds of oil pump failure are very low. Check pressure with an actual gauge if really concerned. I think the previous comment likely hit it. A gauge would verify pump and bearing condition, and watching pressure develop from start to watching it fall after shutdown should give a decent picture of both.
Could it have been something pulling too hard on the belt, like the AC compressor or alternator? If so, the near-stall condition would make sense, explain the chattering (with a belt instead), and would make low oil pressure a symptom instead of a cause. I agree that randomly-low oil pressure seems unlikely . . . unless you've been beating it to death for the last 160,000 miles.
Did the truck nearly stall, leading to the oil light illumination?
No.

That's what I was thinking as well.
Update: I ended up dumping some seafoam and ran 300 miles then flushed the oil(Just because I wanted to, dont' hate). Filled it with 5w20 synthetic. It has been running incredibly smooth since then. I have no idea what happened. Some of what I though was clutch chatter ended up being the muffler bracket was loose and making a chattering noise at low speeds/taking off.
