460 4 barrel questions
It’s a 460 4 barrel 4 speed out of a 1984 f350 flatbed. Starts and idles. I’m buying the whole truck and paying scrap price for it.
I didn’t know ford ever offered a 4 barrel 460 after the 60’s. Was that just a f350 chassis cab thing? Is it a whole other intake or just an adpater?
It seems from pictures like it has Duraspark 2 ignition. That would be great since I’m used to working on my 79 truck. Is it still a Duraspark 2 system? If so what from my 1979 ford 400 truck can I use on a 84 460? As far ignition module, coil, etc.
Before I pay I’m going to try to get the 460 to fire up and I’d like to bring some spare ignition parts in case one of those has gone bad.
My 79 truck has a nv4500 behind it’s 400.
What major changes should I expect in the 460’s clutch setup? I know they are supposed to share bellhousings. It’s pretty straight forward adapting the nv4500 to the 400 and I already have the BBF/nv4500 adapter plate.
There were no 460s in trucks in the '60s, only cars, mostly pillow barge types.
There were 429 2bbls in cars, but in trucks, the truck version was 4bbl all the way to EFI.
It's the whole intake.
Duraspark stuff ought to interchange but you'll have to inspect it to be sure.
I would expect all the ignition stuff to work.
That and the air cleaner.
The bell, flywheel, clutch etc from the 460 should work--you have an adapter for the NV4500 to work behind the 400, right? I bet that will work with the 460 as well.
The bell pattern is the same, but there are differences in the bell depth and some spacing regarding the flywheel mounting.
The 460 should be a hydraulic clutch, but uses an external slave cylinder and a clutch fork similar to a mechanical clutch. It may adapt easily to your linkage.
Get a tune up kit (Holley36-182) it used to be a strip kit IIRR
Get some steel needle and seats (Holley 6-500 is some) for use with today's ethanol laced fuel
As soon as they started fuel injection for the 460 in 1988 the complaint was lack of power (the fuel injected motor had intake air tube restrictors)
Gone was the hard start cold and the dies on road fuel starvation issues and all the other carb trouble of the past (cold weather drivability)
I still run 2 of them
You can make those carbureted 460s run pretty good, especially the ones with rear mixture screws
Have fun with it
