bellhousing question 460

I have a 1985 f 350 with 6.9 diesel and 4 spped tranny. I want to install a 460 engine in this truck and keep the 4 speed. I know that I will need a 460 gas bellhousing. My question is this. The truck has a hydraulic throw out on it. Will any 460 gas 4 speed bellhousing work or does it have to be a specific one for a hydraulic throw out?

The mechanical and hydraulic bellhousings are different and not interchangable.

You could use either bell, but if you want to keep the hydraulic setup, you will need a bell with the provision for it. You could convert back to a mechanical style but thats a lot of extra, unnecessary work.

You need an actual 460 bellhousing, all of the mechanical 460 pattern truck bell housings are actually 351M/400 parts. The 460 didn't come with a 4 speed until 83, and all 83+ 460 trucks are hydraulic clutch.
Some of the 351M/400 bell housings don't clear a 460 flywheel/clutch properly either, which is weird because they all could be had with the same 12" clutch(same clutch as the 6.9 has too.)

You can use a 351 400 bell all you have to do is clearance the inside of the bell slightly to clear the 12 clutch also the hydraulic clutch slave off of a 300 six or 302 351w can be modified to work with the mechanical bell if you would like i can try to post some pics of my install in an 81 using this exact setup. Necessity is the mother of all invention with a little help from torches and a welder.
