New to the group and just bought my first Ford in August. I’ve got a 2023 F350 King Ranch and this thing guzzles the DEF fluid. Is this normal? Just over 3k miles and I’ve probably added 6 jugs already. My 2017 Ram barely used any. It also alerts me way too often that my DEF level is low even when I still have a 1/2 tank. Today I have just under a 1/2 tank and it’s alerting me that my def level is empty and in 75 miles my speed will be limited to 50mph?? I did tow a trailer with my Ranger on it for about 1800 miles but still seems like an awful lot of def usage. Pics below. Any help or insight is appreciated.
The increased DEF use has been found to be expected with the '23+. Apparently they use quite a bit more than previous years.

You're in a 2019, is it 2wd? You must have gotten the rare extra eco version. I don't know what your every day drive consists of, maybe all highway, but my '19 averages about 13-14 MPG in my daily use, completely empty. The dash usually says 14-15 but it hand calculates to 13-14. The only time I can eek out 18-19 is with all highway use, and empty. Yours is special. What do you average empty, all highway?

why does the message tell me that my DEF level is empty when it clearly has a half tank? That does not seem right to me to be alerting me that it’s empty when there’s still that much left.
The PCM is calculating current usage with the remaining amount left and then projecting how far you may go on what remains even though the gauge may seem like you should be able to go further.

So my buddy just got a 23 F550 cab and chassis, picked it up no more than 2 weeks ago.. It's his collision shop tow truck/flat bed. This is his tailpipe... Very weird.
So different than the 250s, 350s and 450s... I'm assuming the C&Cs have the derated 6.7s. I told him about the increased DEF use. His last truck was 17 F550.
He also has an emergency brake fault... It's happened twice already on tows. The brake won't come off. I guess it's an electronic emergency brake... He had to shut truck off and on several times to get it to come off.
It's going in for an alignment on Wednesday because the steering wheel is off. The salesman said they have been coming through with some having steering wheels upside down... He didn't specify but I'd imagine the salesman meant all models because I'm assuming they don't get as many C&Cs as they do the 250 to 450s...
6 jugs @ 2.5 gallons a jug =15 gallons of DEF. Divided by 3000 miles = 200 miler per gallon of DEF.
My 23 HO is getting 300 to 400 miles per gallon of DEF towing my horses around and almost 800 miles per gallon when running empty.
The gauge seems to look at the most recent consumption to calculate distance. I drove 750 miles and my gauge was showing 60%, Climbed a really steep 14% grade mountain as I came out of Escalante Utah My Navigations was showing 250 miles to home and the DEF gauge popped up say 500 miles to empty and still had 57% DEF. Stopped in Salina to top off Fuel and DEF again popped up 350 miles to empty. Got home and filled up fuel and DEF at local truck stop. DEF read 51% full, took 3.2 gallons of DEF. I had driven almost 1000 miles since filling it up. So I consumed 1 gallon of DEF per 312 miles driven while towing a 4H GN trailer that weighs 13,000 lbs across the mountains of Utah. If I getting 312 per gallon of DEF , Why the 500 mile warning when my tank still had 60% or something like 4 gallons left.
I'm not really trusting the gauge any more.
2023 trucks use more DEF than previous trucks. I've heard, that Ford increased DEF consumption and downsized the EGR. Could be a rumor, I can't remember where I read that. In my case above. 3.2 gallons cost me $13 at the pump. Having drove 1000 miles that means it cost me 1.3¢ per mile. Add that to my fuel cost. $4.29 per gallon diesel / 11. mpg that trip and my diesel cost 37.6¢ per mile plus the 1.3¢ for DEF I'm about 38¢ a mile for consumable fluids It's a trival amount. It's just the frustration of the guage falsely warning of shut down.
I gues mines an odd ball almost no DEF use towing or not and 18 normal driving and 14+ towing, way better than my 2015. Both trucks are F350CCLB with the 3:55 the only difference is the 10sp vs ^6 sp. Once at speed towing I switch to economy in the trans and no issues so far at just under 20K.

I'm thinking those 4 extra gears are helping with fuel economy.
