The joint deterioration is a real thing, but it’s not instantaneous as long as all the parts are in good shape, and of the stronger variety.
Some will drive them for years that way, as long as they don’t try too often, to use the power steering to overcome the resistance of the spool.
The most common “spool“ install in my experience is an ARB air locker.
Most of those owners would do it again, but locking and unlocking it doesn’t involve getting out to unlock a hub. It’s a simple as pushing a button/switch in the cab.
