Had my flexplate replaced and now my trans cooler line is leaking at the cooler. I looked at several videos on changing the cooler and it looks like you need a special tool to remove the lines. Does that mean I can't just tighten the nut/bolt on top and have it stop (or slow) the leak?
Any insight is appreciated.
The quick connect fittings are on newer 6.0’s at the radiator.
2000 does not have a trans cooler in the radiator and has no quick connect fittings. It will be a hex head fitting at the transmission, molded steel-to-rubber hose and hose clamps at the cooler.
The upgrade to 6.0 cooler is good advice, but I always tell people to watch transmission temp with a gauge. Most people never NEED a bigger cooler - but it never hurts anything. I do the transition from 3/8” steel line to 1/2” hose barb for 6.0 cooler using compression adapter to 1/2” NPT and then NPT to 1/2” hose barb. You’ll need about 6ft of 1/2” transmission cooler hose.

I just read this thread.
As Jason stated, there are no quick connects anywhere in the 7.3L transmission cooler line circuit. They are all flare nut fittings and crimped rubber to steel line. The early bird 6.0s used flare fittings as well at the radiator but the later ones were quick connects....designed by the Devil himself. I'd love to find the engineer responsible for those awful things in a dark alley.
Plenty of 2000s did have a cooler in the radiator though as did 99.5s. Got two sitting in the yard - stock as the day they came off the assembly line.
Thanks everyone. Turns out it just needed a 5/8" crows foot on a super long extension. Tightened it up and she's dry as my ex wife. I'm back up and running aside from a mysterious SES light that comes and goes. OBD2 says no codes so that's a fun trip for another day.
