89 Ranger Electrical ?

I was wondering if anyone can help me out. A month or two ago the dashboard voltmeter on my 1989 Ford Ranger stopped working. It doent seem to effect any performance of any kind but it really bugs me...lol. Is there any way I can get it working again. I would really like to know if my battery is getting a good charge via the gauge. Thanks in advance.

Hi skin-deep-ink, Welcome to FTE !!

Are the rest of your instruments still working?? (I'm thinking; fuse)

If so, you might want to consider a small (el cheapo) volt meeter to use as a diagnostic tool. We need to determine whether the problem is in the instrument or the wiring - the easiest way to do that is to substitute the installed gage with a known working one temporarily.

Yep, all the other gauges work fine. Just the voltmeter. I looked down one day and it jumped from low to high and back to low a few times and then it just sunk to low and stayed there.

That certainly sounds like a failed instrument as opposed to a failed electrical connection - in my opinion.

Certainly, you may want to wait and see if there are better suggestions (there are some painfully smart folks here!!), but my vote is to replace the instrument its self - it has simply malfunctioned.

HTH.
