E4OD VS 4R100 direct drum question
I'm rebuilding my E4OD that lives behind a 7.3 Powerstroke. It had eaten the direct drum and intermediate sprag, so I'm replacing them. While doing so, I accidently bought a direct drum from what appears to be a 2000 4R100. It is identical to the E4OD (5 frictions, single lube hole, still has the intermediate sprag, no mechanical diode) but lacks the 4 slots for the thrust washer the '95 used. The exploded parts diagrams I have seen say this thrust washer is not used on later drums. From what reading I've done, it seems that I would need to update the sunshell to the later model hardened one.
I just want to confirm with someone who knows if this is correct, with the updated sunshell I can use the 4R100 direct drum in the E4OD and just leave the thrust washer out.

Are you talking about the nub sticking up in the cutouts on the shell, that contacts the direct drum when placed over it? If so, my old shell was already updated as it has the nubs, but the last guy in here put the thrust washer back in anyways.
Thanks for the help!
Denny
Quoted from the E4OD update book:
"There is now a new design Sun Shell with "Tabs" added to the center of the sun shell slots, as shown in Figure 90, implemented by Ford Motor Co. as a running change, during the 2000 model year. This change eliminated the need for the number 8 thrust washer between the forward and direct drums."
